Embodied Character — June ‘26 Drop in Classes
Class Overview: This June only, Embodied Character will be offering drop-in community classes. You are welcome to attend one or all four classes. We will be moving through a simple progression of the work, so if you are able to attend all four, you will begin to feel the path unfold beneath your feet.
Embodied Character is a creative, embodied approach to acting that explores the experience of being-in-character. Drawing from clown, somatics, character theory, constellation-work, parts-work, shadow-work and channeling, this class is an ongoing experiment in what it feels like to be human: to live at different extremes, in different realities, all for the noble purpose of holding a mirror up to the audience.
We call this work “embodied” because it focuses on using the wisdom and intelligence of the body to inhabit different energies, archetypes, inner parts, and character experiences. Moving away from the “expert model” approach to acting, which is rooted in criticism and ideas of “good” or “bad” acting, Embodied Character offers an approach centred on pleasurably entering the creative unknown.
The work encourages the actor’s ability to intuitively enter character experiences within their own body, using their inherent creative intelligence as a pathway into understanding the character’s reality. Embodied Character recognizes that acting is ultimately about the moment to moment experience of being in character. It supports the actor’s growth not only as an artist, but also as a human being and leader in the world.
The work is physical and held within a spiritual frame that allows the actor to understand their practice within a larger life-path context. We explore our own limiting character beliefs and discover the edges of “character” that keep us from being fully and creatively exuberant.
Instructor: Dov began his acting career at the age of 12 when he was cast as the lead in a short film (LOVE CHILD with Neve Campbell) out of Young People's Theater in Toronto. He quickly piled up a series of credits before moving to NYC when he was cast along side Judd Hirsch in Broadway's revival of A THOUSAND CLOWNS. Throughout his career Dov has been committed to growing his craft and studying technique while seeking out the world-class teachers. Dov began training in Linklatter Technique with David Smukler and Natsuko Ohama as well as Meisner at the Atlantic. Upon moving to Los Angeles Dov trained with legendary coach Sandra Seacat who's Jungian dream work helped Dov lessen the perceived divide between character and self, then continued with the excellent Kerrie Keane who emphasized Energetic Openness and Spontaneity. Dov then studied with Michael Beckett who's been teaching at HB studio for over 50 years and was trained by founding teachers Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen, where his understanding of the finer points of craft, the role of the artist and technique have been sharpened. Dov has been coaching actors for many years. Currently facilitating a master class in Toronto as well as holding workshops in NYC. He’s currently in training and seeing clients in the field of Somatic-Psychotherapy.
Cost: $20 per class.
